Work has begun at the site of an Amazon distribution warehouse in south Kalispell. 

“I can confirm we’ve purchased/leased this property with the intent of opening a last-mile facility in the area,” said Nissa LaPoint, a public relations specialist with the online retailer, in an email to the Inter Lake.  

The one-story building is set to be about 28,000 square feet in size and located on United Drive near Fred’s Appliance, according to the building permit filed with the city of Kalispell. The project, termed Project Wolfpack in city documents, is valued at $15.5 million.  

During a discussion at a March 18 Kalispell Chamber of Commerce luncheon, the facility was referenced as a hopeful future boost to the Flathead Valley economy.  

“It should be exciting for employment,” said Bill Moseley, chair of the board of directors for the chamber. 

As a “last mile” facility, the Kalispell warehouse is the final place a product travels before getting to the customer. No timeline for the opening of the facility has been released.  

The contractor is Dick Anderson Construction, a management firm with offices across Montana, Wyoming, Arizona and Illinois. The architect of the project is Scott Conley.  

PJ Sorensen, Kalispell’s assistant director of development services, said the warehouse will be the first development within a commercial industrial site that has been annexed into the city for some time. There will be road work in the area, specifically extending United Drive to connect to U.S. 93.  

Kalispell City Council annexed a portion of the roughly 95-acre property, between United Drive and Lower Valley Road in September. Known as the Gardner/Anderson Ranch, the planned unit development calls for the commercial area on the east side of United Drive and 170 single-family homes on 30.8 acres.  

“That whole area, basically from United Drive up to Lower Valley [Road], was incorporated in this project overall, so [the warehouse] really is just the first lot being developed in that development,” Sorensen said.  

Amazon opened its first Montana facility in March near Missoula. The building, which is 71,000 square feet, is larger than the one slated for Kalispell. One hundred employees were hired by opening day at the site, according to the Montana Free Press, not including delivery drivers.
