“Locke & Key” co-creator Meredith Averill has been brought on as the new showrunner for Amazon‘s upcoming TV series adaptation of hit romantasy novel “Fourth Wing.”
Based on the best-selling “The Empyrean” romantasy book series from author Rebecca Yarros, “Fourth Wing” is set inside the brutal world of Basgiath War College, where there is only one rule: graduate or die. Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was always expected to live a quiet life — but she’s sent on an entirely different path when her mother, a general in the military, orders her to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become dragon riders, the elite of Navarre.
Yarros’ “The Empyrean” book series began with the release of New York Times best-seller “Fourth Wing” in May 2023, followed by sequel “Iron Flame” in November 2023 and third book “Onyx Storm” in January. The titles and release dates for the planned fourth and fifth books have not yet been announced.

First put into development in October 2023, the “Fourth Wing” TV series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society. The project has not yet been ordered to series and does not have a cast attached.
Averill joins “Fourth Wing” as showrunner following the exit of Moira Walley-Beckett (“Anne With an E” creator and “Breaking Bad” writer) from the role in July after signing on as showrunner in the summer of 2024.
Along with Averill, additional executive producers on “Fourth Wing” include Jordan and Outlier president Elizabeth Raposo, as well as author Yarros. Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy and Athena Wickham of Kilter Films will also executive produce. Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark are producing for Premeditated, the sister company to “Fourth Wing” publisher Entangled Publishing. Outlier Society executive vice president of TV Stefano Agosto will co-executive produce.
