Amazon’s James Bond gun controversy, explained

October 6, 2025

What’s the point of a license to kill without a Walther PPK?

It’s a fair question, but one that was leaving James Bond fans confused over the weekend. Streamers in the U.K. noticed that thumbnails for the 007 series on Prime Video appeared to have been altered to remove guns from the images.

Considering how central firearms are to the iconography of James Bond — who is most famous for walk, spinning, and firing a gun at a gun — it’s not too surprising that some of the edited photos appear somewhat… unnatural.

Why is Pierce Brosnan‘s hand like that? How odd to crop Daniel Craig‘s hands at the base of his thumbs! Do Roger Moore‘s arms just keep going, all the way to his knees like one of those inflatables outside a car dealership?

The changes were not only obvious, but awkward. And when the fans made their dissatisfaction known, Prime U.K. quietly removed the thumbnails from the platform.

But eagle-eye Bond fans have noticed similar changes to the U.S. thumbnails, including the tile for Skyfall which has also had its gun removed — albeit more subtly.

With Amazon’s acquisition of the Bond franchise, fans have been eagerly awaiting signs of what the future might look for the world’s greatest spy in the hands of one of the world’s largest corporations.

The hiring of Denis Villeneuve seemed to suggest some seriousness about the filmmaking, but a hesitation to even include firearms in the imagery associated with the series could suggest a misunderstanding of what it is Amazon actually bought.
