Amazon’s New Greener Packaging: How It Benefits You • iPhone in Canada Blog

Amazon packaging hero.

Amazon has officially announced new, eco-friendly packaging for its devices, including Echo, Kindle, and Fire TV. If you’ve recently purchased one of these devices, you’ll likely have seen the new paper packaging.

The updated design uses 30% more recycled fibre and cuts ink use by 60%, replacing bleached boxes with a natural brown kraft look. This shift reduces reliance on virgin tree fibres and harmful bleaching chemicals, says Amazon.

We’ve seen this new packaging first-hand recently in the new Kindle Paperwhite and Echo Show 21 (more on that coming soon).

Here’s a picture of what unboxing a Fire TV Stick HD looks like. All paper and cardboard, no more plastic:

Inside, the company replaced plastic wraps with paper-based materials, which are easier to recycle. QR codes on packaging now feature tactile markings to help customers with visual impairments access setup guides and product details.

Amazon has also worked on reducing shipping emissions by compacting box sizes and relying on ocean transport, which emits 95% less carbon than air transport. Since 2015, the company has cut packaging weight per shipment by 43%, avoiding over 3 million metric tons of packaging waste, including nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually in packaging.

The new packaging is already being used for the latest Amazon devices, such as the newest Kindles, Echo Show, and Fire TV—which are on sale right now. Less plastic is a good thing. Great to see nothing but paper in device packaging from Amazon’s latest products.
