Amazon’s New Mass Effect Series Won’t Start Filming Until Next Year

August 26, 2025

Following on from the enormously successful Fallout series, Amazon is getting ready to film another major video game adaptation.

As reported by Production Weekly (via IGN), the Mass Effect Prime series will begin filming in Q4 2026, i.e. from October to December next year. In all likelihood, based on this schedule, the series will be released around late 2027 to early 2028.

Garrus and Shepard share a dance in the Citadel DLC of Mass Effect 3.

While we have very little information on the show right now, back in June, a synopsis was shared online that seemed to confirm that the series is a direct adaptation of the original 2008 game.

“In Mass Effect, Commander Shepard, an elite human soldier, must stop a rogue Spectre agent, Saren, who has allied with a deadly race of synthetic-organic machines known as the Reapers,” the synopsis read.

However, some argued that this might just be a placeholder and that it shouldn’t be taken too seriously until details are officially confirmed. Amazon could instead leverage its experience with Fallout to tell a new story in the same universe, given how expansive the Mass Effect series is thanks to the breadth of player choices that make each playthrough unique.

There’s also no word on casting yet, but interestingly, John Cena posted a picture of Mass Effect 2 to Instagram shortly after the TV series was announced, sparking many to believe that he might be playing a major role in the show. Some even speculated that he could be Shepard. Given that Fast & Furious 9 (which starred Cena as Jakob Toretto) writer Daniel Casey is penning the script, it would certainly make sense.

But not everyone is convinced. John Cena is an avid gamer, and his Instagram is a mix of incredibly random posts, so it might be nothing more than him celebrating with the rest of us. Time will tell.

The Mass Effect series will be overseen by BioWare veteran Mike Gamble, Marvel Studios producer Avi Arad, and Jessica Jones executive producer Karim Zreik, with Mindhunter writer Doug Jung serving as showrunner. There’s no word on a release date yet, but we now have a better idea of when to expect it by.
