Amazon’s Reported James Bond Casting Choices Are Worrying

June 30, 2025

Amazon just announced that legendary filmmaker Denis Villeneuve would take the helm of its acquired, set to be rebooted, James Bond franchise, drawing near-universal praise for the pick.

But now, reports about who Amazon is considering to actually play James Bond himself are…genuinely bad, for the most part.

The idea is to get away from the 50+-year-old Daniel Craig Bond and go young. Very young. Seemingly the youngest the series has ever gone. Variety reports that three actors under thirty are on the shortlist for consideration. They are:

Jacob Elordi (age 28) – The Euphoria star who has graduated to more serious roles like Saltburn, Wuthering Heights, The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Frankenstein. He’s Australian, but that doesn’t rule him out, it seems.

Harris Dickinson (age 29) – Dickinson has been a rising star over the last few years especially with roles in Where the Crawdads Sing, The Iron Claw and the infamous Babygirl. If I had to pick one option out of these three, it might be him, and it certainly wouldn’t be the next guy.

Tom Holland (age 29) – The last actor to squeeze in under 30 years old with the extremely high-profile Tom Holland. I have absolutely nothing against Holland, who has been our MCU Spider-Man for almost a decade and will now lead Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. That’s great, but it is utterly absurd to imagine him taking on the role of a young James Bond, I’m sorry, there’s just no way.

It’s really no offense to these guys, but I’m really against this whole idea of a very young James Bond when there are so, so many other older actors who seem perfect for the part. Idris Elba, Henry Cavill, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Taron Egerton, Richard Madden, Robert Pattinson, Aaron Pierre. The list goes on.

The one bright spot here is that whoever the lead is will be working under Denis Villeneuve, who I am confident is going to be able to make anything work. But we know he will not have final cut on the movie, and this idea of a younger Bond reeks of Amazon trying to do a “fresh” take on a character to appeal to a younger crowd for a character that should not be reshaped just to be “trendy.” If this is the start of Amazon having a heavy hand here, I’m not sure how much I believe in the future of the Bond franchise.
