Ameresco And BXP Launch Operations Of New Solar Canopy Project In Virginia

May 28, 2025

Ameresco, Inc., a prominent provider of energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions, has announced the successful commissioning of its solar photovoltaic (PV) canopy project in Reston, Virginia. The project was delivered in collaboration with BXP, Inc., the largest publicly traded developer, owner, and manager of premier workplace properties in the United States.

This newly operational solar canopy system has a total installed capacity of 1.3 MW and is projected to generate approximately 1.5 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually. The renewable energy produced will directly benefit BXP’s Reston Town Center facility by lowering energy costs through competitive pricing, enhancing energy security, and reducing dependence on the local electric grid.

Strategically installed atop a parking garage, the solar canopy not only creates additional covered parking but also maximizes otherwise underutilized urban space by converting it into a productive source of renewable energy. This behind-the-meter installation, completed by the end of 2024, exemplifies an efficient and innovative approach to sustainable infrastructure development.

Jonathan Mancini, Senior Vice President – Solar Project Development East, PV Grid-Tie at Ameresco, stated, “We’re delighted to see our partnership with BXP begin delivering reliable energy solutions to downtown Reston. Developing the solar canopy project has been a phenomenal reminder of the innovative ways we can create solutions to provide energy security and resiliency to cities and towns across the country. We look forward to seeing Reston Town Center powered by efficient and affordable energy for years to come.”

The commercial operation of this project represents a significant step forward in Ameresco’s broader mission to support the energy transition through scalable, impactful, and site-specific solutions. By partnering with BXP, Ameresco has demonstrated how the integration of renewable technologies within existing real estate infrastructure can contribute to long-term sustainability and resilience goals.

Both Ameresco and BXP reaffirm their commitment to advancing clean energy solutions that are not only cost-effective but also aligned with broader environmental and community-focused objectives. This project adds to Ameresco’s growing portfolio of distributed energy systems, reinforcing its leadership in the evolving landscape of sustainable energy.
