RESTON, Va. — Ameresco, Inc., a leading energy solutions provider, has officially begun commercial operations of its solar photovoltaic canopy project in Reston, Virginia. Developed in partnership with BXP, Inc., the largest publicly traded developer and manager of premier workplaces in the U.S., the installation is part of a broader push to advance clean energy infrastructure and improve urban energy resilience.

The 1.3-megawatt solar system is installed atop a parking garage at BXP’s Reston Town Center. It is expected to generate approximately 1.5 million kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity annually, supporting the facility’s energy needs while offering long-term economic benefits through competitive energy pricing. In addition to cost savings, the project strengthens energy security and reduces reliance on the regional power grid.

Ben Myers, Senior Vice President of Sustainability at BXP, praised the collaboration, noting the complexities the project team had to overcome. “Ameresco has been a critical partner in the delivery of impactful solar projects,” said Myers. “This project required overcoming several economic, technical, and logistical hurdles. Ameresco’s commitment, creativity, and expertise were essential in making this project a success within the vibrant environment of Reston Town Center.”

The solar canopy, which was completed at the end of 2024, makes innovative use of rooftop space by doubling as a covered parking structure. This dual-purpose design not only enhances the garage’s functionality but also turns it into a megawatt-scale source of clean energy in a high-traffic urban area.

“We’re delighted to see our partnership with BXP begin delivering reliable energy solutions to downtown Reston,” said Jonathan Mancini, Senior Vice President for Solar Project Development at Ameresco. “Developing this canopy project has been a phenomenal reminder of the creative approaches we can take to build energy resilience in cities and towns nationwide.”

The successful completion and activation of the Reston solar project marks a significant step forward in Ameresco’s mission to provide sustainable, scalable energy solutions. Both Ameresco and BXP expressed their continued commitment to advancing renewable infrastructure in ways that benefit communities economically and environmentally.
