Ameresco, Inc., a leading provider of energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions, has announced the award of an $11 million design-build contract with Reed College. The scope of this project includes a complete mechanical, electrical, and seismic upgrade of the college’s existing boiler plant. This effort marks a significant development in the long-term relationship between Ameresco and Reed College, and it represents a strategic step forward in the institution’s master plan to fully decarbonize its campus.
This new contract is in addition to a previously awarded $2.3 million agreement for the design and procurement of infrastructure necessary for the boiler plant upgrade. Ameresco is also currently working on a $1.8 million campus-wide lighting upgrade project. Combined, these initiatives bring the total value of ongoing work between Ameresco and Reed College to more than $15 million. These projects underscore the college’s commitment to sustainability and Ameresco’s dedication to delivering comprehensive energy solutions that enhance infrastructure and reduce environmental impact.
The upgrade of the boiler plant is expected to significantly improve the energy efficiency of campus operations, contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and provide long-term operational benefits for the college community. The work supports Reed College’s environmental goals and reflects its continued focus on projects that align with its commitment to responsible resource management.
Lou Maltezos, President of Central & Western USA, Canada Regions at Ameresco, said in a statement, “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Reed College and support their commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. Our comprehensive energy solutions are designed to meet the unique needs of the college and enhance the learning environments on their campus.”
Steve Yeadon, Executive Director of Facilities Operations at Reed College, stated, “The central plant upgrade will not only deliver additional cost savings but also enhance energy efficiency and infrastructure, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainable campus energy management. These improvements reflect our dedication to creating a more sustainable and efficient campus environment and reduce our impact on greenhouse gases.”
The partnership between Ameresco and Reed College began more than a decade ago with a $5.4 million campus-wide energy efficiency project. That initial engagement involved the retrofit and replacement of mechanical systems, lighting, controls, and plumbing across the college’s urban campus in southeast Portland, Oregon. The project led to substantial improvements in occupant comfort and lighting quality while delivering over $250,000 in annual energy cost savings and reducing overall emissions.
As Ameresco and Reed College continue to collaborate, the focus remains on implementing advanced energy strategies that contribute to both institutional priorities and broader climate goals. This partnership highlights a shared vision of reducing energy use, extending the life of critical infrastructure, and supporting a more sustainable future.
