Ameresco SUNEL Energy SA, a joint venture formed between Ameresco, Inc. and SUNEL Group, has announced a significant development in Romania’s renewable energy sector with the awarding of €303.4 million in Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contracts for three large-scale solar parks. These projects, located in the southwestern part of Romania, will have a combined capacity of 466 MWp, marking a substantial step forward in the country’s transition to cleaner energy sources.

The development of these solar parks aligns with Romania’s broader strategy to enhance its energy security, promote economic growth, and fulfill its environmental commitments, particularly its goals for reducing carbon emissions. One of the key objectives of these projects is to replace existing coal-fired power generation, which will play a vital role in Romania’s commitment to phasing out coal entirely by 2032. The shift to solar energy will contribute significantly to reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and advancing the country’s renewable energy agenda.

Ameresco SUNEL Energy SA, as the appointed EPC contractor, will be responsible for the entire process of delivering these solar projects. This includes overseeing the design, procurement, construction, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of the solar parks. The company is committed to ensuring the highest standards of efficiency, safety, and environmental performance throughout all phases of the projects.

Pete Christakis, President of East USA & Managing Director of Ameresco SUNEL Energy SA, “These projects exemplify our commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions and underscore the importance of Europe’s growth and stability. By leveraging our expertise and resources, we are not only helping Romania achieve its clean energy goals but also reinforcing our strategic diversification across Europe.”

Konstantinos Zygouras, Vice President at Ameresco SUNEL Energy SA, stated, “Romania’s vast solar potential, combined with strategic investments in renewable energy, will position the country as a leader in Europe’s clean energy transition. We are proud to partner with OMV Petrom CEO to drive this ambitious project forward, fostering economic growth while contributing to a more sustainable future.”

The solar parks will incorporate more than 757,000 fixed-tilt solar modules. These modules are designed to capture and convert sunlight into energy with maximum efficiency, helping to optimize the energy generation capabilities of the solar parks. The expected environmental benefits of these solar projects are significant. Once fully operational, the solar parks will help to reduce Romania’s carbon footprint by approximately 734,789 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. This reduction in emissions will contribute to Romania’s efforts to meet its climate commitments and will also support Europe’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions.

The construction of these solar parks is expected to be completed within 18 months, with the projects marking an important milestone in Romania’s renewable energy ambitions. These solar parks will not only help Romania reach its renewable energy targets but will also strengthen its position as a leader in the regional transition to clean energy. The successful completion of these projects will provide long-term benefits, both in terms of energy production and environmental sustainability, making a positive impact on the country’s energy landscape for years to come.
