Another Chicago-Area Cannabis Shop Hit By Molotov Cocktail-Throwing Arsonist

May 6, 2025

VILLA PARK — Three Chicago-area cannabis shops have been damaged by arson fires over the past two weeks.

The latest fire occurred about 4:10 a.m. Saturday at the Villa Park Cannabist Dispensary, 133 E. Roosevelt Road, according to the Villa Park Police Department.

Security footage showed a man dressed in all black and wearing a face mask approach the dispensary window and break it with an unknown object, according to police. The man threw a Molotov cocktail into the broken window and fled on foot.

The flame quickly went out, police said. A Cannabist spokesperson said the Villa Park location is currently open.

Saturday was the second overnight arson fire Cannabist has experienced in recent weeks. A Molotov cocktail was thrown into the business’s Jefferson Park location at 4758 N. Milwaukee Ave. around 3:15 a.m. April 19, according to Chicago Police.

A Molotov cocktail was also thrown into the Chicago Cannabis Company, 4009 N. Damen Ave., in North Center on April 27 around 3:50 a.m.

In both Chicago incidents, a man wearing a face mask, black hooded sweatshirt, black sweatpants, black gym shoes and a black fanny pack used a hammer to break the front windows of the shops, lit a Molotov cocktail and threw it inside the businesses, police said.

Police issued a business alert warning owners about the recent arson fires Thursday. No one was in custody as of Monday, according to police.

The Chicago Cannabis Company is open, however Cannabist’s Jefferson Park location remains closed, according to the company’s website.

“We can confirm that an unfortunate incident occurred at our Villa Park dispensary, similar in nature to the event that impacted our Jefferson Park location two weeks ago. As with the Jefferson Park incident, which remains under investigation by the Chicago Police Department, we are committed to full cooperation with law enforcement,” a Cannabist spokesperson said in a statement. “The Cannabist team remains resilient, and we are grateful for the ongoing support of our loyal patients and customers.”

The Jefferson Park Cannabist also had to close at the end of March after a driver crashed a car through the dispensary’s front window. The building’s lobby and security checkpoint station were damaged during the March 26 crash, but nothing was reported stolen and the dispensary reopened a few days later.

Chicago Police are asking anyone with information about the incidents to call 312-746-7618 or submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com. The Villa Park Police Department can be reached at 630-834-7447.
