Director of Player Development Nehemiah Horace said he wants to give kids access to a gym, something that he never had growing up.
As college teams around the nation hit the court for the NCAA March Madness tournament, one Northwest Arkansas gym is also helping the next generation get on their feet.
Arkansas Athletes Outreach provides opportunities for youth to be active with a full-court gym while also teaching them how to approach life with positivity. They offer training, camps, football and basketball leagues, and tournaments in two locations, Rogers and Fayetteville.
On this week’s episode of Around the Corner, Tiffany, Jo, and Danny visited Arkansas Athletes Outreach in Rogers to learn the fundamentals of basketball.
The crew started by doing line drills and practicing their dribbling and passing before joining Director of Player Development Nehemiah Horace for the day’s lesson.
“I want to give kids the opportunity that I never had I grew up not being able to be in a gym all the time, so knowing that I have access to a gym to get them in a gym, man, means the world to me,” Horace said. “This is the next generation that leave our country, even like the high school kids, they’re gonna be the next teachers for my son coming up so me in the beginning, are able to give them a positive atmosphere and teaching them like this is not just about basketball, it’s about raising the next generation.”
Horace said that every day during spring break camp this week, they had a message of the day. While the crew was there, the message of the day focused around adversity.
“Today’s message is facing adversity. Who can raise their hand and tell me what that means? Anybody can tell me what that means? What does facing adversity mean to you?” Horace asked his campers.
“Facing adversity means facing tough facing tough times, but still going through,” Micah, a student from Little Rock, said.
“Things will get hard. So how do you respond when things get hard? That’s what’s going to help you on the basketball court and off the basketball court,” Horace said.
