Artist and composer collaborate on installation on environment
June 10, 2025
Julian Perry and Stevie Wishart are teaming up at Snape Maltings in Suffolk for an installation called The Foliate Bosses, which will be displayed until June 29.
The installation is part of the Aldeburgh Festival and focuses on coastal erosion as a symbol of the ‘environmental crisis’.
Perry has spent two years creating large paintings of the natural life falling from East Anglian cliffs, with the centrepiece being his “Foliate Bosses”, paintings of fallen trees, wild plants, and mud.
The artwork is on display until June 29 (Image: Julian Perry) These works are inspired by medieval roof bosses.
Wishart, known for early music, has created an original soundscape using recordings of rare and endangered birds, such as the bittern and nightingale, along with her music.
She will also perform a specially commissioned piece responding to Perry’s paintings.
Both Perry’s and Wishart’s work is influenced by ancient forms, with Perry’s work inspired by Northern Renaissance painting and Wishart being an expert on 12th-century music.
