Asheville solar plant closure leads to laying off about 78% of workforce

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Hundreds of jobs are disappearing in Asheville as a solar company closes its facility here.

A notification filed with the state reveals Pine Gate Renewables on Roberts Street in Asheville is closing its plant, laying off more than 78% of its workforce as it files for bankruptcy.

The database shows 223 people in Buncombe County will be impacted.

The company cites renewable energy policy changes under the Trump administration.

Blue Ridge Power also laid off more than 500 employees a month ago, according to Business North Carolina.

“There’s been a series of these in North Carolina, and you know, North Carolina has been kind of one of the leaders in clean energy manufacturing over the past few years,” said senior advisor on clean energy, climate power, Jesse Lee.
