At least 10 shot, 1 killed in Grand Blanc Township church shooting, police say
September 28, 2025
GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. – At least 10 people were injured, and at least one was killed, in a shooting at a church in Grand Blanc Township on Sunday, police said.
The shooting happened at 10:25 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025, at Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on McCandlish Road in Grand Blanc Township.
Grand Blanc Township police Chief Williams Renye said a 40-year-old Burton man drove his vehicle through the front doors of the church and then got out and started firing gunshots with an assault rifle.
As of 1 p.m. Sunday, 10 people had been taken to nearby hospitals, and one person was pronounced dead. Two are in critical condition, and seven are stable.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this incident, which was completely unnecessary and avoidable,” Renye said.
A DNR officer and a Grand Blanc Township officer found the suspected shooter and exchanged gunfire with him, Renye said.
The suspected shooter was shot and killed.
The church building was set on fire, and police believe that was deliberate. The fire was extinguished by Grand Blanc Township firefighters between noon and 1 p.m.
Police believe they will find more victims once they’re secured the scene.
Officials are planning to serve search warrants at the suspected shooter’s house and go through his cellphone records. They are trying to determine the motive.
The FBI has devoted 100 agents to this case. They are going to interview the many witnesses who were inside the church.

For anyone who is there, the pavilion to the north has been chosen as a reunification site. Off-site reunification will be at the Trillium Theater at Holly and McCandlish roads, police said.
“My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community,” Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a social media post. “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable. I am grateful to the first responders who took action quickly. We will continue to monitor this situation and hold the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc close.”
Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson posted a video on Facebook saying his department is working with federal, state, and local authorities.
“The entire church is on fire,” Swanson said. “We’re working with fire and all those things that happen during active shooter training. This is a dynamic scene.”
“I can’t actually believe that this would happen in my city,” resident Joe Ostrander said. “Nothing like this has ever even come close to happening here. It honestly — I can’t even believe that it’s happened here.”
