Atlas Renewable Energy signs new PPA to advance 1 GW solar plan in Colombia
January 27, 2026
Atlas Renewable Energy has announced the signing of a new power purchase agreement (PPA) with a leading Colombian electricity trading company, enabling the development of the El Campano solar power plant in northern Colombia. The project is designed to strengthen the reliability of the national power system and respond to the country’s growing electricity demand.
El Campano will be the second Atlas Renewable Energy asset to enter the construction phase in Colombia and is a cornerstone of the company’s investment strategy to reach 1 GW of installed renewable capacity in the country over the coming years. The plant will have an installed capacity of 128 MWp and is expected to begin operations by the end of 2027.
Under the long-term PPA, El Campano will supply approximately 245 GWh of renewable electricity per year, providing a stable, reliable and competitive source of power. This output is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 110,000 Colombian households.
Awarded to Atlas Renewable Energy in Colombia’s 2024 Reliability Charge Auction, El Campano is considered a strategic infrastructure project. Beyond adding new generation capacity, it will reinforce system reliability and enable a higher share of renewable energy in the expansion of the country’s power mix.
In terms of energy transition impact, the project is expected to avoid around 38,200 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, supporting a more resilient energy system capable of underpinning Colombia’s long-term economic development.
“This project reflects our focus on the effective execution of strategic power generation projects for the country and on delivering tailored energy solutions that meet our clients’ needs,” said Rubén Borja, Country Manager of Atlas Renewable Energy Colombia.
The milestone builds on the confidence generated by Atlas Renewable Energy following the successful delivery of its first Colombian project, Shangri-La, which was developed and commissioned in record time under high technical, environmental and social standards. That experience has reinforced the company’s ability to deliver large-scale renewable projects with operational excellence and certainty for the national electricity system.
During construction, El Campano will adopt a strong local value-creation approach, promoting the training and hiring of local labour and the implementation of social and environmental programmes aimed at strengthening productive capacities and supporting regional development.
A key pillar of this strategy is “Somos Parte de la Misma Energía” (“We Are Part of the Same Energy”), Atlas Renewable Energy’s flagship programme to foster community participation in the renewable energy sector through technical training and employment opportunities. In projects such as the Shangri-La solar plant in Tolima, the initiative trained more than 140 women from 13 local communities, expanding employment opportunities and increasing female participation in utility-scale solar construction.
With the El Campano Solar Plant, Atlas Renewable Energy continues to consolidate its presence in Colombia through projects that add tangible capacity to the power system, enhance grid reliability and create the conditions for the country’s sustainable growth.
