Austin Energy launches first commercial solar project under Solar Standard Offer program

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Energy unveiled its first commercial solar project under the city’s Solar Standard Offer program.
The project features 812 rooftop solar panels on a warehouse capable of generating enough electricity to power about 600 homes annually, producing nearly 660,000 kilowatt-hours per year.
Solar system owner Radial Power and contractor Axis Solar installed the panels under the program launched less than a year ago. The initiative allows commercial property owners to host solar panels or lease rooftop space to developers, with electricity sold back to Austin Energy.
“The Solar Standard Offer is a game-changer,” said Richard Genece, Austin Energy vice president for customer energy solutions. “It’s a major opportunity to meet our climate goals and create long-term value for everyone involved.”
Businesses leasing space face no upfront costs and can generate passive income while supporting sustainability goals, according to Tim Harvey, Austin Energy director of energy efficiency services.

The energy feeds into Austin’s renewable energy supply and helps power local homes, including low-income residents through the Community Solar Program.
