Australia is set to pass a landmark bill that will overhaul its environmental laws after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government secured support from the left-wing Greens party on the last sitting day of parliament for the year.

The legislation will introduce tighter nature protections while clearing the path for faster approvals of major projects in sectors including renewable energy and mining. It will amend the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1991, which has long been seen by both industry and the environmental movement as flawed and outdated.
