Australia’s New South Wales approves 3.65 GW of clean energy projects

April 24, 2025

The State Government of Australia’s New South Wales has granted grid access rights to four large-scale wind, solar and battery projects with a combined capacity of 3.65 GW. The projects are Origin Energy’s 1,460 MW Yanco Delta wind project, Spark Renewable’s 1,007 MW Dinawan Energy Hub wind, solar and BESS project, Someva’s and AGL’s 831 MW Pottinger Energy Park (wind and BESS), and BayWa’s 262 MW Bullawah Wind facility. The projects include more than 700 MW of battery storage, capable of powering up to 300,000 households during peak demand. Once operational, the projects should generate enough energy to power about 1.6 million homes. The first projects are expected to start operations by 2027-2030.

The Southwest Renewable Energy Zone (South West REZ) is expected to drive more than AUD17bn (US$11bn) in private investment in solar, wind and energy storage projects.

Australia aims to have 82% of electricity generated from renewable sources by 2030. In 2023, the country had a total capacity of 106 GW of which solar accounted for 32% and wind for 11%.
