Avangrid solar plant will help power tech giant’s Oregon data centers

The latest deal is with Amazon for power from the 41-megawatt Oregon Trail solar project in Gilliam County that’s expected to go online in 2027.
PORTLAND, Ore. — This story comes from the Portland Business Journal, a KGW news partner. The full story is here.
Avangrid has landed another contract with a big Oregon data center operator for power from new or upgraded renewable energy resources in the state.
The latest deal, announced on Monday, is with Amazon for power from the 41-megawatt Oregon Trail solar project in Gilliam County that’s expected to go online in 2027.
Amazon operates data centers in Umatilla and Morrow counties and last year bought land in Gilliam County for expansion in Oregon.
“With this new project, we are adding to our existing investments in Gilliam County and Oregon in a way that strengthens the region while producing electricity to help meet the growing energy demand across the country,” Sy Oytan, CEO of Avangrid’s power division, said in a written statement.
Amazon declined to comment.
In July, Avangrid said it signed on Google to a contract for power from an existing Oregon wind farm in Gilliam County that is being revamped to boost capacity and productivity.
Avangrid, which has major offices in the Portland metro area, in 2024 announced a similar deal with Amazon for power from another Gilliam County wind farm that’s being “repowered,” in industry parlance.
The Oregon Trail project is relatively small, about a quarter the size of Avangrid’s nearby Pachwáywit Fields project that went into operation 2023. That power is sold to Portland General Electric for a program that allows participating large power users to claim they get their power from a new renewable source.
