Bell County Sheriff’s Office warns residents of Bitcoin scam

March 28, 2025

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – The Bell County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Bitcoin scam using the department’s name.

The department says two victims have come forward saying they’ve been contacted by scammers claiming they have an arrest warrant for either missing jury duty or another legal process.

The scammers, according to BCSO, have been known to use the names of personnel in the department and fake names to legitimize their scams.

In a recent incident, the sheriff’s office says a victim received a voicemail requesting a callback.

The current scam involved $25,000 to be moved into a Bitcoin Kiosk at South Ann and Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Harker Heights, BCSO says.

In documents sent to a victim via text, the sheriff’s office says instructions were provided on how to give the money.

The victims of these scams are almost always required to stay on the phone for the duration of the scam, according to BCSO.

Some numbers the sheriff’s office says scammers are calling from include 682-281-6021 and 254-263-9924, but authorities say any number can be manipulated for the scammers use.

Although the current scam includes requesting $25,000 and using the Bitcoin Kiosk at South Ann and Veterans Memorial Boulevard, the sheriff’s office says any dollar amount could be demanded and any kiosk could be used.

BCSO reminds residents that they do not take money for fines or ever use Bitcoins or gift cards.

If a member of BCSO does contact you, the sheriff’s office says they will encourage you to verify who you’re speaking with.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant against these criminals,” BCSO said in a Facebook post. “We strongly encourage you to verify any communication with a person claiming to be a law enforcement officer. Any proper law enforcement officer would want you to feel safe with the person you are speaking with.”

Anyone with questions can call the Bell County Sheriff’s Office at 254-933-5412 or your local law enforcement.
