Bitcoin mining company plans largescale data center in eastern Kentucky

May 26, 2026

KENTUCKY (WKYT) – The bitcoin mining company TeraWulf announced it is expanding in eastern Kentucky with the purchase of a new high-performance computing development site called the Muskie Data Campus.

The company said the campus could support more than one gigawatt of data center capacity over time. An initial 500 megawatts is expected to begin ramping up in the second half of 2028, with another 500 megawatts targeted for 2030.

The site sits on about 1,000 acres at Eastpark Industrial Park, with roughly 285 acres controlled for hyperscale development and room to expand. TeraWulf said the project is tied to major power upgrades, including a 345-kilovolt substation connecting into the 765-kilovolt transmission network, aimed at delivering redundant, utility-scale power.

Company leaders said access to power and transmission is now the biggest constraint for large AI and computing projects. They are pitching the campus as a shovel-ready site that could bring construction activity, long-term skilled jobs and new investment to the region.
