A cold front is sweeping through the Greater Toronto Area Friday morning, according to a special weather statement by Environment Canada.

As the front moves in, about two centimeters of snow, “rapidly falling” temperatures and strong winds are expected throughout the region, meteorologist Katrina Eyk told CBC News.

“As that temperature falls through zero this morning things will freeze and become icy and slippery,” she said.

The national weather agency warned residents “travel may become difficult” with the freezing conditions. 

Wind gusts will slowly build through the day and may reach up to 60 to 80 kilometers per hour, Eyk said, adding people should secure loose objects outside, such as garbage bins, and be prepared for potential power outages. 

Flurries and strong winds are expected to ease off overnight with a low of -5 C, which will feel closer to -11 with wind chill.

While there is a potential for snow over the weekend, Eyk said the icy conditions are only in Friday’s forecast.
