Brighton, N.Y. — Checks will soon be in the mail for thousands of residents in Brighton who were recently abandoned by the town’s designated renewable energy company.
Town leaders announced Monday that nearly $1 million will be paid out as part of a settlement in a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of 10,000 customers who were enrolled in Brighton’s Sustainable Energy Community Choice Aggregation program.
In 2022, ICON Energy, the town’s energy supplier for the CCA program, defaulted on its clean electricity supply contract.
Settlement checks will go out over the next few days to people who participated in the program as reimbursement for lost savings.
“It’s been a long challenge as litigation always is, but we are pleased with the result,” said Town Supervisor Bill Moehle. “We are not happy this program had to end early, because this was a significant part of our sustainability planning and implementation.”

The town said most of the 7,700 customers who were still participating in the program when ICON Energy stopped service will get between $70 and $200. Customers who left the program before then will get $40.
