EUREKA, Calif. – California is rolling out a major investment in its transportation infrastructure.

The California Transportation Commission (CTC) announced on Friday that they are allocating nearly $1.7 billion in funds to enhance safety, mobility, and resiliency on state highways.

According to the CTC, $86.5 million will be directed to repair roads and infrastructure affected by recent wildfires and storms in Southern California. This funding supports Caltrans’ mission to build and maintain a robust transportation system for the future.

“Investments made today support Caltrans’ mission to build and maintain a transportation system that helps Californians now and decades into the future,” said Mike Keever, Acting Director for Caltrans. “This funding translates into safer travel, more accessible mobility options and strengthening our roadways to protect all travelers during extreme weather events.”

The projects include a significant $195.5 million for improvements along Interstate 805 in San Diego, Chula Vista, and National City. Another $129 million will replace a commercial vehicle enforcement facility near Fairfield.

In Malibu, $30 million will go towards rebuilding infrastructure damaged by the Palisades Fire and rainstorms. This includes replacing a retaining wall and reconstructing hillsides above State Route 1.

District 2 will see various projects, such as the Greenville Wye TMS Improvements Project in Plumas County and the Lake Shasta Viaducts Project in Shasta County. These projects aim to enhance transportation management systems and repair bridge decks.

The funding includes nearly $651 million from Senate Bill (SB) 1 and approximately $536 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Since its passage, IIJA has provided California with nearly $62 billion for infrastructure, creating more than 170,000 jobs.

SB 1 allocates around $5 billion annually for transportation projects, speeding up construction based on available funds.
