Cannabis business damaged after Sunday morning fire

A fire broke out at a Scarborough building housing multiple businesses, including a cannabis facility, and is under investigation.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — A fire in Scarborough is under investigation as of Sunday afternoon, according to the Scarborough Fire Department.

The Scarborough Communications Center received a report of a fire alarm at 10 Snow Canning Rd from a monitoring company at about 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning, according to officials.

When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy smoke inside a 76,000-square-foot building that contained multiple businesses, including the Maine Cannabis Shop.

An “all-hands” response was initiated after firefighters reported an active fire on the second floor of the building, with the sprinkler system actively functioning. The sprinkler system contained the fire to the room where it started, limiting damage to that unit, officials said.

Fire crews worked at the scene for approximately two hours, inspecting the fire area and providing ventilation to clear the smoke from the large industrial building. No one was injured, officials said.

Scarborough firefighters received assistance at the scene from the fire departments of Old Orchard Beach, Biddeford, Saco, and Portland.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office, along with Scarborough Code Enforcement, also provided support to the Scarborough firefighters on the scene.

The fire originated from a unit operating as a cannabis facility, and the Office of Cannabis Policy (OCP) has been notified of the incident.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and they are saying it does not currently appear suspicious.
