Cannabis customers flock to Michigan for 4/20 celebrations, including Ohioans

As churchgoers celebrated Easter, marijuana enthusiasts gathered early Sunday morning at dispensaries across Monroe, forming lines out the door to celebrate 4/20.

MONROE, Mich. — As Easter Sunday and the unofficial marijuana holiday 4/20 came on the same day this year, cannabis dispensaries in Monroe, Michigan saw long lines and a festive crowd, with many customers traveling from neighboring states to take advantage of the deals, selection, and legal access.

Marijuana enthusiasts gathered early Sunday morning at dispensaries across Monroe, forming lines out the door to celebrate April 20 — an unofficial holiday for cannabis culture.

For many out of state shoppers, the trip across state lines was well worth it, even for people from Ohio, where recreational marijuana sales became legal in the last few years.

“I would say the quality for sure,” said Taylor Dunn-Roberts, who made the drive from Ohio. “Michigan and California are usually like the starters of that whole thing. So, they have, I feel like, better weed or quality of it. You’re going to have more variety, more options, and then obviously for cheaper.”

Recreational marijuana has been legal in Michigan for seven years, but this marks the first time Ohioans like Dunn-Roberts can legally celebrate the holiday, following Ohio’s recent legalization.

“I feel like it’s much more accepted,” Dunn-Roberts added. “Everybody’s going to have their own opinion about it. But you see everybody come here — all ages, every person. So, I definitely feel like it’s more accepted now.”

Some traveled even farther to join the celebration. Brittany Tackett came all the way from Kentucky and said the upbeat vibe made the experience more than just a shopping trip.

“It was like King’s Island or Six Flags — people usually get fussy waiting in long, hot lines,”  said Tackett. “But then here, nobody’s fussy. Everybody’s smiling and getting along and just laid back.”

Renus Henry, an Ohio resident, echoed that sentiment.

“Everyone’s very accommodating. The lines are not very long. The quality is good. The prices are very good, so I’m very happy with what I got today,” said Henry.

Dispensary staff say the weekend was one of their busiest yet. Jason Person, general manager of King of Budz, said foot traffic has been nonstop.

“This weekend has been crazy all around from Friday until now,” said Person. “Saturday is our busiest day of the week anyway. So, I think with it being the holiday weekend and Saturday, I think that’s what that was.”

For Ohio dispensaries like Zen Leaf in Bowling Green, 4/20 was definitely one of the most anticipated on the calendar.

“This day is our Super Bowl,” said Joshua Kudisch, vice president of Zen Leaf. “We’re really looking to reward our communities, try to give them as many discounts as we can and really give them that big bang.”

With the combination of a major holiday and growing legalization, businesses and customers alike found plenty to celebrate on 4/20.
