A large sign the Top Deck Cannabis Dispensary is in place at the former Broken Chimney restaurant building on Tenney Street.

Most of the remodeling work to convert the building to a cannabis store has been done.

But Chad Anderson, one of the investors in the cannabis dispensary, said this week that the facility won’t open until June.

At least.

Anderson has said that the company bringing the cannabis dispensary to town has faced delays in hiring contractors and getting the needed building supplies.

But now, the issue is with state regulators.

Illinois has the strictest regulations on cannabis dispensaries and grow operations of any street where the drug is legal, Anderson said.

And the state won’t give the go-ahead to open Top Deck until June. That’s when a final state inspection is scheduled.

And it’s possible, Anderson said, that the approval process could drag out beyond then. If the state inspectors find any problems with the facility, the owners will have to solve them, and schedule a followup inspection by the state.

Top Deck’s owners already have faced a state-imposed delay. They wanted to install a security camera in the building, and it took a month to get state approval of the camera’s location, Anderson said.

Top Deck’s owners also are planning a cannabis grow facility, which will be at the northwest corner of Cole Street and Railroad Avenue in the Kentville Road Industrial Park.

Anderson said work should begin soon on preparing the ground for the building. The facility should open sometime next year, he said.
