Police say they have discovered a cannabis factory in Surrey growing drugs with an estimated street value of more than £1.7m.

More than a thousand plants, as well as living accommodation, were found inside the building in Randalls Way, Leatherhead, on Monday after people reported “a strong smell”.

Surrey Police said the factory was being guarded while it was dismantled and officers carried out their investigations.

PC Ewan Keen said: “This is a great result in seizing these plants and making sure they do not get sold on our streets.”

“These cannabis factories can be a huge risk and can cause fires, which in a residential location, could cause serious damage.

“In addition, we often find evidence of modern-day slavery at these locations. Only by taking robust action can we safeguard the most vulnerable members of our society.

“We continue to work to identify and dismantle organised crime networks and drugs coming into Surrey.

He said officers were grateful for the information provided by the community which led to the discovery.

Anyone with further information about the factory in Leatherhead is asked to come forward.
