Cannabis store owner clarifies mold concern confusion

February 20, 2025

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – Several pre-packaged cannabis products were recalled across the state due to mold. Western Mass News spoke with 6 Brick’s Dispensary who told us many customers have had some confusion following this recent recall.

We spoke with the owner of 6 Brick’s in Springfield, Payton Shubrick, and she told us how many are concerned, thinking that all products at their dispensary are contaminated with mold, despite that not being the case. It was only three prepackaged products from one specific brand which they no longer sell at 6 Brick’s.

“If folks have concerns, they can always contact us or the dispensary they got their products for clarity but in no way shape or form do they have to worry about the entirety of the 6 Brick’s menu being impacted,” Shubrick said. ‘

Several dispensaries across Massachusetts were affected by a recall recently after the cannabis Control Commission found possible yeast mold and coliforms in a particular product.

6 Brick’s weren’t the only ones impacted either, with several other shops across the state being attached as well.

“This happens in grocery stores on a recurring basis from things as serious as eggs and chickens to Frito lays,” Shubrick emphasized.

She says 6 Brick’s has received several concerns from customers about the recall, and she wants to make it clear that 6 Brick’s no longer sells the affected brand, adding that it was only three prepackaged products from one specific company that was thought to be contaminated.

Folks should trust that we as their preferred dispensary are doing all that we can to visit cultivators to ensure the following proper guidelines to ensure they are growing safe cannabis and also having it tested appropriately.

If you’re still skeptical of prepackaged product though, 6 Brick’s does have a deli style option available on Fridays and Saturdays. Shubrick says this style of shopping gives customers the opportunity to see the product before purchasing. She says thing to look at when shopping deli style is nug structure, explaining that you want it to be clean cut and if you see a slight frost, that’s a good thing indicating the product was cured properly.

“And most importantly with deli style, what’s so beneficial about it is you able to use the age old adage which, is the nose to nose so when you smell it, if you have a positive reaction to it you’ll most likely have a positive interaction.”
