Cañon City police warn of increase in scams involving Bitcoin

December 18, 2025

CANON CITY, Colo. (KKTV) – The Cañon City Police Department said they have seen an increase in scams involving Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency payments.

Police said scammers are pretending to be law enforcement, government agencies or utility companies, and in some cases even your own family members, and demand payment in Bitcoin.

If you receive a suspicious message, police said you should stop and verify the request through a trusted source before sending payment.

Police said legitimate agencies would never ask for payment in Bitcoin, gift cards or prepaid apps.

They also reminded everyone that urgent threats or pressure are known to be common scam tactics, and once bitcoin is sent, it is almost impossible to recover.

If you believe you have been targeted or may be a victim, contact law enforcement to report the incident.
