CHN Energy brings 1 GW floating solar mega-project fully online in China

January 19, 2026

The rapid acceleration of the international renewable energy market has been a sight for sore eyes. The vast majority of nations around the world now have significant renewable energy projects being developed or already producing vast amounts of energy for domestic and international use. China has revealed that it has fully commissioned the latest ground-breaking floating solar mega-project that will reshape the global renewable energy market for years to come as nations aim to meet clean energy and emission reduction targets.

China has launched a ground-breaking solar energy project

The China Energy Investment Corporation has set the renewable energy market ablaze as the company has commissioned the world’s largest open-sea offshore solar project, known as HG14. The 1 GW floating solar project has shaken the renewable energy market to its core thanks to the advanced technology and pioneering processes for creating solar power in the open sea.

Developing renewable energy assets has become a top priority for the vast majority of nations around the world as they aim to meet the anticipated increase in demand for clean energy, as well as meet the self-imposed emissions reduction targets by the end of the decade.

China is fostering a new era of clean energy generation thanks to the pioneering floating solar project

CHN Energy has noted that the 1 GW open-sea floating solar energy project has now been fully commissioned and has begun supplying clean energy to the national grid. The project is located off the coast of Dongying, Shandong province, and combines solar PV with an extensive energy storage system as well as an aquaculture asset.

China is revolutionizing the renewable energy market with the pioneering solar project

The floating solar development reached full capacity grid connection late last year and now has the status of the largest of its kind anywhere in the world. The project is being developed by Guohua Investment under China Energy Investment Corp. (CHN Energy).

The project is the first gigawatt-scale fixed-pile offshore solar development for China, as well as being the first-ever offshore solar plant approved under China’s national three-dimensional sea-use rights framework.

With a total investment of approximately $1.2 billion, it marks a new era of renewable energy production in one of the most energy-diverse nations in the world. The HG14 project will transmit the electricity generated via a 66 kV subsea cable system, which will work in tandem with a 220 kV substation.

Additionally, a co-located energy storage system enhances grid stability and dispatch flexibility for the Chinese solar project. As nearby Japan is exploring a new system that may turn snow into energy, China is aiming to lead the international energy transition from conventional fossil fuel-based energy production towards the untapped and often overlooked potential of renewable energy.

New pioneering solar power technology has painted a pretty picture for the global market

With China commissioning the latest floating solar project, a new era of renewable energy generation is set to emerge in 2026. Astonishing advancements in solar power technology have boosted the output capacity and status of solar power as a clean energy resource. HG14 is expected to produce approximately 1.78 TWh of clean energy every year. The rapid transformation of the Chinese energy market has been praised by the energy experts across the entire industry, positioning China as the go-to destination for renewable energy across the international market this year.
