Cities move to ban gas-powered leaf blowers amid environmental concerns

June 1, 2025

LOS ANGELES — Environmentalists have long criticized gas-powered leaf blowers, and now a growing number of cities are taking action to ban them.

These devices, which have been in use since the 1970s, are facing opposition from environmentally conscious lawmakers and residents who cite noise, health risks, and pollution as major concerns.

Last year, California enacted a law prohibiting the sale of gas-powered leaf blowers. In Washington, D.C., individuals using these devices can incur a $500 fine.

Despite these moves, some states, including Texas and Florida, have enacted laws to protect the right to use gas-powered leaf blowers.

Meanwhile, major retailers such as Home Depot and Lowe’s have reduced their inventory of gas-powered leaf blowers and are encouraging customers to consider alternative options.
