CHICO, Calif. — The Chico City Council has moved to explore the possibility of allowing commercial cannabis cultivation in the city.
The council voted 5-2 in favor of a staff report on the feasibility of commercial cannabis cultivation. Six people spoke to the council, both in favor of and against the proposal.
“We would like to move it so we could start purchasing cannabis that was grown in this county by our local people,” said Charles Burnon.
“Vertical integration is a big part of growth,” said David Petersen, co-owner of C4 Chico Cannabis Company. “Allowing businesses to cultivate, manufacture and distribute locally keeps more value here.”
However, not everyone supported the idea, including Councilmembers Tom Van Overbeek of District 6 and Mike O’Brien of District 1. “I’m against increasing the production of dope and having more dope dealers.”
“I’m going to encourage the industry to come forward, put some teeth into the laws related to illegal marijuana and the black market, and I’d have more willingness to listen to what you have to say,” O’Brien said.
The council will now seek a detailed report on the costs and potential impacts of allowing commercial cultivation in Chico before making any final decisions.
