For many Marin residents, lowering their monthly utility bills has become just as important as reducing their environmental footprint. A free event hopes to show local residents how they may be able to do both at the same time.

On Saturday, Our Bright Future: Clean Energy Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of Novato City Hall at 901 Sherman Ave. in downtown Novato.

Hosted by the City of Novato, in collaboration with North Marin Community Services, the County of Marin, MCE and Ride and Drive Clean, the event will bring together clean energy experts, local agencies, contractors, nonprofits and community organizations for a lively, family-friendly street festival focused on practical ways to save energy, reduce costs and create more sustainable homes.

“After exploring the range of informational booths, we want attendees to leave feeling confident about making choices that improve efficiency and home comfort, lower utility costs and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable community,” said Sarah Thacher, Marin County’s sustainability program coordinator.

The Marin Sustainability Team develops programs to promote renewable energy, address climate change, encourage green building, recognize green businesses and implement energy-efficient projects throughout Marin County.

“There are many pathways to an energy-efficient, electrified home,” she said. “And we hope attendees learn about the approaches and technologies that best fit their unique situation.”

Visitors can explore a wide range of clean energy technologies and sustainable transportation options, and experts and contractors will be available to discuss everything from heat pump water heaters and induction cooking appliances to solar systems, battery storage, HVAC upgrades, electric vehicles and e-bikes.

They can also get free advice from experts; learn about rebates and financial incentives; watch live product demonstrations; speak directly with local contractors about home improvement projects; and explore sustainable transportation programs and incentives.

Sustainable Marin Schools will host hands-on activities for children that highlight sustainability efforts in Marin K-12 schools, and Marin’s Climate and Sustainability Division will feature a popular dollhouse model demonstrating home electrification and energy-efficient opportunities in an easy-to-understand way.

Food, drinks and ice cream will also be available for purchase, and families are encouraged to relax and picnic on the nearby Novato Civic Green lawn.
