Clean energy firm suggests renewable transport infrastructure for Laredo

September 26, 2025

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Laredo is the busiest inland port in the U.S., but with such a prestigious title, it also comes with disadvantages.

According to a study by the Rio Grande International Study Center (RGISC), one of the primary causes of pollution in the Gateway City is attributed to high levels of transportation.

Because of this, Greenspace E-Mobility USA is proposing a comprehensive plan to introduce fleets of electric tractor-trailers in Laredo. According to Horacio de la Torre, the General Manager of Greenspace E-Mobility USA, it might be available as soon as this year.

He stated, “[We’re] really excited, because this could really help the planet. It’s something very important because it produces zero emissions, and we’re currently working on bringing all the infrastructure this needs.”

Under the Greenspace E-Mobility USA initiative, trucking companies are expected to transition their fleets from diesel-powered to electric ones.

This shift could significantly reduce carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, aiming to eliminate a large portion of greenhouse gases produced by heavy-duty transportation. According to the RGISC study, smoke from diesel engines spreads throughout Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, affecting areas beyond just heavily trafficked zones.

“A lot of people are at home thinking, ‘I see a truck hindering the road. There is a lot of traffic because of this.’ At the end of the day, they still have a job to do,“ said Rafael Tawil, one of the founding members of the Laredo Motor Carriers Association (LMCA) and the owner of a truck company.

Members of the association, including Tawil, were given a tour to look into the electric trailers. For Green Space E-Mobility, the next step is to encourage the numerous trucking businesses in Laredo to adopt more environmentally friendly practices. They are also considering collaborating with the city to offer incentives for those who make the transition.

According to the CEO and Founder of Greenspace E-Mobility USA, William Pui, “We’re contributing to a society that is forward thinking, moving to what is the latest technology in the world and trying to transition the whole community into more innovation. We’re thinking of sustainability and better technology.“

The company is engaging not only with business owners but also with lawmakers in the U.S. Additionally, they are in contact with their Mexican counterparts, aiming for a unified green movement.
