CROOK COUNTY SCHOOLS – Beyond resolutions: Investing in our children

January 14, 2026

As we look toward 2026, I encourage us to think beyond the usual resolutions and make a shared commitment to invest in the children and grandchildren of our community. While funding, facilities and programs will always matter — and we will continue to advocate strongly for them — the most meaningful investments often happen quietly, in homes and in the small moments of everyday life. Taking a few extra minutes to read with your child or grandchild, asking about their day, or simply listening — really listening — communicates something powerful: you are valued. These small, consistent acts build confidence and a sense of caring that extends far beyond the classroom and well into adulthood.

Many of us feel pulled in a hundred directions, balancing work, family and responsibilities, often with constant screens competing for our attention. In the year ahead, let’s be more intentional about creating moments of connection with your kids that don’t require a device. Reading together, setting phones aside, sharing meals and engaging in face-to-face conversations may seem simple, but they teach our young people important lessons about balance, presence and care. Young people notice far more than we realize — they learn from what we prioritize and how we choose to spend our time.

Turning the calendar doesn’t erase the challenges we carry with us, but it does offer a clean page — an opportunity to pause, reflect and choose how we want to grow and be better in the year ahead. As we step into this new year, let’s do so with intention and purpose — for ourselves, for our families and for our community. Through everyday actions, we can make this season not just a fresh start but a meaningful investment in our kids — one that strengthens the roots of our schools and nurtures the future of our children.
