‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ Series in the Works at Amazon

Prime Video is looking to bring the world of to TV screens.

The Amazon-owned streamer and Sony Pictures Television are developing a series adaptation of the story, based on the Crane-Iron Pentalogy series of novels by Wang Dulu. The books also served as source material for Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning 2000 film.

Jason Ning (Lucifer, The Brother Sun) is writing and will executive produce alongside Ron Moore (Outlander, Battlestar Galactica). Both have overall deals at Sony, which released Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon through its Sony Pictures Classics label and owns rights to the Crane-Iron books.

The logline for the potential series reads, “Amidst stunning landscapes and spectacular action, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon follows Shu Lien and Mu Bai, two star-crossed warriors, as they struggle between forbidden love and the pull of modernity — caught between preserving their way of life or embracing a future together.”

Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat played the two lead roles in Lee’s film, which also starred Zhang Ziyi. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon won four Oscars in 2001, for best foreign language film, cinematography, art direction and original score. Lee was nominated for best director, and the film was also nominated for best picture.

Ning and Moore (via his Tall Ship Productions) will executive produce along with Johnny Levin, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, Maril Davis of Tall Ship Productions, and Hong Wang and Qin Wang for the Wang Dulu estate. Ying Lou is co-EP.
