A member of the custodial staff at a Connecticut high school is accused of distributing cannabis and alcohol to students.
Thomas I Ortiz, 37, of New London, is charged with three counts of risk of injury to/impairing the morals of a minor, three counts of illegal dispensing of cannabis or cannabis product and one count of sale or delivery of alcohol to a minor, according to the City of Groton Police Department.
On April 8, police concluded a month-long investigation into the distribution of an” illicit substance” by a member of the custodial staff at Marine Science Magnet High School, located at 130 Shennecossett Road in Groton. As a result of the investigation, Ortiz was developed as a suspect, police said.
Ortiz was “immediately placed on administrative leave and banned from school grounds after administrators received the initial disclosure,” according to police.
An arrest warrant was requested and granted by the New London Superior Court, police said.
Ortiz was arrested and was held on a $75,000 court-set cash/surety bond. He was arraigned on Tuesday in New London.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the City of Groton Police Department Detective Division at 860-446-4186.
