CT recreational cannabis retail sales set new high
June 18, 2025
Recent data from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) shows the price per gram of cannabis in Connecticut continuing to fall through May, even though the average price per product increased.
In May, cannabis cost $9.98 per gram, down slightly from April, when on average it cost $10.03. The price per gram of cannabis has been declining since July 20244, when it cost $12.16. Since that time period, the price has fallen each month, except for between January and February 2025, when the price rose by one cent.
Cannabis was most expensive in March 2024, when it cost $12.51 per gram.
While the price of cannabis has fallen, retail sales of adult-use cannabis products have increased in recent months. In May, retail sales set a record, with retailers collecting roughly $18.7 million in adult-use products. In April, retailers collected roughly $17.5 million. Previously, the record monthly amount collected by retailers stood at roughly $17.9 million in December 2024.
Retail sales of medical marijuana also rose slightly in May 2025 but remained well below sales for recreational products. In May, medical marijuana sales totaled roughly $6.5 million.
The number of retail adult-use products sold in May also reached a record high, with roughly 832,600 products sold. The previous month, there were roughly 505,000 products sold. In the medical market, the number of products sold decreased slightly, falling from roughly 195,000 sold in April to roughly 194,000 in May. The average price per product also rose slightly for both markets in May.
Cannabis flower remains the most popular product sold in both markets, accounting for 45 percent of sales in May and 48 percent of sales since recreational cannabis first became available for sale in January 2023.
Despite falling prices and an increase in sales, Connecticut’s cannabis market lags behind other states in New England. In 2024, Connecticut had the highest price per gram of cannabis and the lowest per capita sales across Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.
In 2025, Connecticut continues to have a higher price per gram and lower sales than neighboring states. In Massachusetts, retailers sold $142 million worth of adult-use products. In April, the last date for which data was available, the average price per gram for adult-use cannabis was $3.31.
Connecticut adult-use sales do outpace those of Rhode Island, where retailers sold $8.68 million in adult-use products in May. Rhode Island does not report the average price per gram of cannabis.
