Cupra’s Dream of Selling Cars In the United States Isn’t Dead Quite Yet

March 26, 2026

Volkswagen Group’s Cupra brand first made noise about coming to the U.S. market back in late 2024, with goals of reaching U.S. customers by 2030. Naturally, we all got a little excited to get our hands on the sporty-leaning products. Things have changed quite a bit since then, with the automaker walking back those plans in July 2025 owing to “ongoing challenges within the automotive industry.” Things aren’t entirely doom and gloom, however, as Cupra executives have just confirmed that a U.S. market push is still very much in the cards.

The news comes by way of Cupra CEO Markus Haupt, who reiterated the brand’s intentions to ultimately sell vehicles in the United States to Edmunds. That said, the timeline for the plans is still up in the air, as the automotive industry is undergoing a bit of a volatile moment. The general state of the world also apparently gives the VW Group some pause, which is completely understandable if you’ve opened the news lately.

“We see the environment that we are living in, with lots of geopolitical changes from one day to another,” Haupt told Edmunds. “We took a very bold decision to freeze the plans to enter the U.S., because we were convinced that it was not the right time to take a decision that requires a big investment in such a changing environment.”

“We don’t think it is the right moment, right now, for us to do it, to be honest,” Cupra global head of communications Cecilia Taieb added. “Let’s see how things go and how things develop. … When you see what is going on in the world right now, from a commercial standpoint, you need to be very careful about what you get into. Let’s see when things stabilize a little bit, and when there is a clear path, we will decide.”

Given the utter chaos that surrounded U.S. tariffs for much of the last year, this decision is understandable, if not disappointing. That said, the brand’s shift away from an all-electric future is sure to make the Cupra models more attractive to U.S. buyers, especially now that our federal EV tax credits have been axed.

While they haven’t specified which cars and SUV could reach the U.S., Cupra has suggested plans for a lineup including gasoline, hybrid and pure electric models. The VW Group on the whole has been considering expanding production facilities in the United States as a workaround for the tariffs, though there’s no indication thus far that Cupra would be involved in such a massive shakeup. Sadly, given how things are currently going, I would expect to see Cupras Stateside later rather than sooner.
