Custodian accused of giving cannabis, alcohol to students in Groton

GROTON, CT (WFSB) – A custodian at a school in Groton was arrested for giving cannabis and alcohol to students, police said.

Thomas Ortiz, 37, of New London, was charged with impairing the morals of a minor, illegal dispensing of cannabis, and delivery of alcohol to a minor.

Groton city police said they had been looking into reports that someone was distributing illicit substances to students at the Marine Science Magnet High School in Groton.

They concluded a month-long investigation on April 8. Ortiz was developed as the suspect.

“Ortiz was immediately placed on administrative leave and banned from school grounds after administrators received the initial disclosure,” Groton city police said in their report.

He was later arrested and charged.

Police said he was held on a $75,000 cash/surety bond.

Ortiz was arraigned on April 8 in New London.
