NEW YORK (WABC) — Cyber Monday is officially here, and 7 On Your Side has tips to help you score big and get the most bang for your buck when it comes to online shopping.
Shopping expert Trae Bodge is dubbing this holiday season as one marked by technology.
“It is a techie, techie Christmas. There are so many great tools we should be using to save money and help guide our shopping this year,” Bodge said.
Starting with what to buy.
“The tech is really the star of the show on Cyber Monday. If you need a laptop, a small home appliance, a TV, earbuds, a phone — those are the things that I would be looking at for Cyber Monday,” Bodge said.
To save even more, consumers can consider giving pre-loved tech a second chance.
“If you’ve got maybe a teenager on your list who’s looking for a camera, you can buy a gently-used camera at a site like mpb.com and save up to 40%,” Bodge said.
And don’t waste your time searching for coupons. Instead, opt for free browser extensions that will do the heavy lifting for you by looking for discounts. Some extensions Bodge recommends include PayPal Honey, Rakuten, RetailMeNot and CouponCabin.
Shoppers can also take advantage of the coupons and exclusive savings offered in retailers’ apps.
Bodge also has a new tip for consumers this year: Embracing help from artificial intelligence.
“A.I. might seem scary, but it’s actually your friend for holiday shopping. It can give you inspiration, personalized recommendations, help you save money. So, it’s definitely worth checking it out,” she said.
7 On Your Side put in a prompt for help in buying a gift for a 10-year-old nephew who likes science. Google Gemini searched, reviewed, sourced and found a sale!
“So, if you’re looking to save money, you can use an A.I. tool by asking, ‘what’s on sale?'” Bodge said.
‘Especially if you go to a retailer chat bot like an Amazon’s Rufus or Walmart Sparky and you say, ‘hey, I’m looking for a gift for a 10-year-old, what’s on sale?’ Or, ‘I’m looking for something that’s under $50.’ So, it’s a really good way to narrow those parameters for your gift buying.’
When using A.I., or other online tools, beware of scams and fraud.
Threat actors can manipulate A.I. with biased recommendations and imposter links. They also want to steal your ID, so always be sure to check the URL.
Most importantly, protect your privacy. That means don’t grant A.I. full access to your online wallet or browser extensions.
In other words, you have to limit what you share.
