Czech central bank governor mulled investing in Bitcoin – Ledger Insights

January 7, 2025

The Governor of the Czech National Bank, Aleš Michl, told an interviewer that he had considered investing a small amount of central bank funds in Bitcoin as a diversification asset, during an interview with CNN Prima News.

He added, “luckily there are seven board members,” implying that the proposal was rejected. “We can continue to debate about it,” he added. “I was thinking of buying just a few Bitcoins,” he said, emphasizing that he had not considered a significant investment.

The topic came up after Mr Michl emphasized the need for the central bank’s assets to be diversified across foreign currencies and asset classes. Previously the Czech National Bank reduced its gold holdings to eight tons, whereas it is now up at 50 tons, and the Governor plans to increase that to 100 tons over the next 3.5 years.

There’s been much speculation about countries creating strategic Bitcoin reserves since Trump was elected as a pro crypto President.

In his July speech at the Bitcoin conference, President Trump stuck to the script when it came to a Bitcoin reserve. Rather than saying that the U.S. would buy Bitcoin, he stated that the U.S. would not sell the Bitcoin it already holds as a result of confiscations and the like.

Days later Senator Cynthia Lummis introduced the Bitcoin Act, a program to purchase one million Bitcoin worth $100 billion at today’s prices, so that the U.S. acquires a stake of roughly 5% of all Bitcoin. Former Democrat US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers said that “there’s no reason to do that other than to pander to a generous special interest group.” However, he acknowledged that “there are probably respects in which crypto has been overregulated by overzealous regulators.”

Three weeks ago CNBC’s Jim Cramer asked Trump a direct question about a strategic reserve for crypto. Trump replied, “I thinks so. We’re going to do something great with crypto because we don’t want China or anybody else, it’s not just China…others are embracing it, and we want to be the head,” and then he moved on to AI.
