D.C.’s medical cannabis market saw a remarkable surge in April, with overall sales leaping over 50% from March to nearly $9 million, a new record. This boom was largely fueled by a dramatic increase in registered patients, with a nearly 66% rise in patients served in just one month (from 20,127 to 33,384). D.C. residents, non-D.C. patients, and temporary patient registrations all showed significant growth, according to the monthly metrics report released by the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration.

This expansion coincides with the closure of many unlicensed shops and the opening of 13 new legal dispensaries in April, bringing the total to 36. However, despite the market’s overall growth, the average revenue, if split equally, per dispensary actually dipped. With more shops splitting the growing pie, individual dispensaries could have seen their average monthly revenue drop by almost $9,000 compared to March.

Beyond retail, the market was bolstered by a near 102% increase in manufacturing sales, reaching close to $3 million, driven by new concentrate and edible offerings. While cultivation center sales experienced a nearly 30% decrease, dispensary sales of flower still climbed by almost $1 million. Vapes, edibles, and concentrates all recorded significant sales increases, with April 2025 sales nearly $4 million higher than the same month in 2024. The trend of new openings continues into May, with at least nine more open shops.
