Delivery by drone: Shawnee prepares for Amazon’s new delivery service
November 17, 2025
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The holiday shopping season is already underway with stores ramping up Black Friday sales long before Thanksgiving.
That shopping means there will be more deliveries being made, and we don’t just mean UPS and FedEx trucks arriving on your block.
Amazon is preparing to rollout its new Amazon Prime Drone Delivery Service.
A company spokesperson said the service is expected to begin for the holiday season. That means any day now.
The service won’t be available to everyone in the metro.
Amazon plans to deliver within a 7.5-mile radius of its Kansas City, Kan. warehouse on Riverside Avenue. That includes part of Shawnee.
“About two thirds of the city is included in the flight radius from the KCK Amazon warehouse,” Doug Donahoo, City of Shawnee, said. “That doesn’t mean every home is eligible to receive delivery by drone but some will be and so we want folks to know the services are coming,”
The City of Shawnee said police and other first responders are working with Amazon to know how to handle incidents the may arise when the new service begins.
Prime Air will fly its 83-pound drone at 200 to 400 feet in the air. It will travel at 55 to 60 mph.
The company said the dronges are equipped with technology to detect and avoid objects, which include people and animals.
Operators at the launch site are scheduled to monitor the autonomous drones, according to Amazon.
