DOT’s strategy for 100% renewable energy includes EV growth
July 23, 2025
HONOLULU (Island News) — The Department of Transportation (DOT) presented goals and strategies to the Honolulu City Council on Wednesday in achieving 100% renewable energy by 2045 where one targets more electrification of vehicles.
A major strategy to meet the lofty goal in 20 years includes how to fuel those cars and enable that sector to continue to grow, with DOT already putting in place charging stations in Kahului and Aloha Tower on Oahu.
As more and more cars move away from the gas pumps, there are concerns about maintaining our highways.
“It’s a step in anticipation of many of the strategies of our plan to make sure that we aren’t still able to to support the regular maintenance of our roads with less of our gas tax,” said Laura Kaakua, DOT Office of Climate Mitigation Adaptation & Culture manager.
Electric Vehicle owners locally who pay $50 a year for road usage if their mileage is less than 6,300 miles a year seemed okay with the idea since they’re using the same roads as those who pay taxes at the pump.
