Drum major by day, author by night: High schooler’s book Asani hits Amazon shelves
Andersson Gervacio, an 11th-grade student at Wilson Early College High School, has turned a classroom assignment into a published book, “Asani.” What began as a short story for his English II class under the guidance of Mrs. Delena Flakes transformed into a novel, showcasing Gervacio’s creativity.
Gervacio hopes his journey from student to author encourages his peers. “I never expected that something I wrote for class would turn into a real book,” he said. “My teacher’s encouragement and the support of my classmates inspired me to keep writing. I hope my story shows other students that their ideas are worth pursuing.”
Beyond his literary achievements, Gervacio is a busy student. He is pursuing a 2-year college diploma from Lamar State College in Port Arthur, Texas, while also participating in numerous extracurricular activities. He serves as a drum major in the band, is a member of the Kingsmen Club, Bible Club, and Youth in Government, and holds leadership roles as the vice president of the Chess Club and student body president.
“Asani,” now available on Amazon, is a tale of self-discovery and endurance, inviting readers to become part of the journey. LaSonya Baptiste, the principal of Wilson Early College High School, praised Gervacio’s determination: “Watching this young man’s journey has been truly inspiring. He faced challenges that could have easily discouraged him, yet he chose perseverance over defeat.”
