Editorial: AI causes irreversible damage to the environment

December 7, 2025

As the number of artificial intelligence users rapidly increases, many people are not taking into consideration the overall impact it has not only on our society but also on our climate.

Generative AI creates visual graphics and audio based on patterns it learned from its larger data set. The system in use reduces the number of paying clients for graphic designers and visual media creators, and it also contributes significantly to global warming.

The data center used to house the machines used for AI requires massive amounts of fresh water to cool the appliances down.

With more and more people using generative AI applications like ChatGPT, more fresh water is used to keep up with the demand. ChatGPT uses 10 times more energy than Google.

Global warming is already a pressing issue. As society advances, the greenhouse gases being emitted are increasing rapidly.

This problem, combined with the massive use of fresh water by humans and these generative AI systems, means we are rapidly running out of resources and further worsening the state of our environment.

The lack of limitations on AI is severely concerning. As the software increasingly gets better, the impact of the media it produces has a greater impact. More and more people are believing the videos being made.

At this rate, society will not realize how much of an impact AI has on the environment until it is far too late. It is crucial to be mindful of these applications.

As a whole, people need to work together and recognize the severity of this problem. There also needs to be more limitations on AI as it increasingly becomes more popular.

The rapid rise of AI demands more responsibility and awareness than it currently has. If society fails to acknowledge the consequences AI has on our environment, the risk of severely damaging the environment rises.

At one point, it may cause irreversible damage.

By implementing more mindful actions, we can ensure that it will not come at the cost of our planet’s future.
