SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) — Several communities across Michigan, including some in mid-Michigan, have been awarded money to support hosting renewable energy projects.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy said $3.87 million in funding comes from the seventh round of Renewables Ready Communities Awards.
According to EGLE, $750,000 has been awarded to Midland Township for hosting Salzburg Battery Storage, a 150-megawatt battery storage project with an expected construction date of June 2027 and an expected operation date of December 2028. $500,000 has been awarded to Fairgrove Township in Tuscola County for hosting Tuscola II Energy Storage, a 100-megawatt battery storage project with an expected construction date of April 2027 and an expected operation date of May 2028. Mason Township in Arenac County has been awarded $120,035 for hosting Au Gres Solar, a 55-megawatt solar project with an expected construction date of July 2026 and an expected operation date of September 2028.
All awards are pending approval by the State Administrative Board.
“These awards demonstrate EGLE’s commitment to partnering with communities to build Michigan’s clean energy future,” said EGLE Director Phil Roos. “Through the Renewables Ready Communities program, local governments are gaining the resources they need to reinvest in public safety, essential services, and projects that strengthen their communities.”
The program offers funds to local governments for community improvements and infrastructure projects and services like road and bridge repairs, public safety, park enhancements, and building upgrades. EGLE said it encourages communities to host large-scale renewable energy projects that supplement the project’s tax revenue and community benefits.
Half of each award is distributed at the start of project construction, and the other half when operation begins.
Other awardees include Coldwater Township, Delta County, Grant Township, Lawrence Township, Newberg Township and Saline Township, EGLE said.
